Literally, Makalu signifies the greatness and black one because of its dark brooding appearance. Being the fifth tallest mountain in the world, people do not attempt to climb it. It is for sure that if you are planning to climb Makalu, you need a lot of mountaineering experience. Otherwise, you may not overcome it which is known from the people who have attempted it before. It was first climbed by a French Team in 1955. Makalu has two important supplementary peaks.

Makalu is one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. It is a massive peak, made up of four sided pyramid shape. Due to its unique structure and features, Makalu is termed as a peculiar mountain. Makalu (8463m) is a highly challenging mountain, both for climbing as well as trekking.  It is located 14 miles away from the east of Mount Everest. Its minimum altitude is 3900 meter and 8463m is its maximum altitude. The most appropriate seasons for the Trek to Makalu are Spring and Autumn, as the skies are clearer and the weather is more favorable.   It is suggested to have a high level of fitness and acclimatization in order to take on the Makalu Trek.

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the Adventure Himalayan representatives will pick you up and transfer you to the hotel. After refreshment, you will be briefed in short about your tour by our guide or tour leader.  If you have any questions or doubts about your trip then they should be asked and clarified at this time. Overnight stay at hotel.

Kathmandu Valley includes several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath (famous Hindu temple and cremation ground) Boudhanath (massive Buddhist stupa). We can also visit Swyambhunath, also known as Monkey Temple, which was built roughly 2000 years ago.  Finally, we can visit Patan, city of fine arts. In the afternoon, you will be meeting with your trekking guide and will check all the necessary things. Overnight stay at the hotel.

From Kathmandu, we take a short, scenic flight to Tumlingtar, the initial place from where our trekking starts. From Tumlingtar, we will drive to Nun (1505m) and we will be exploring for the rest of the day. Overnight stay at a guesthouse or tent.

After having a breakfast early in the morning we will start our trekking to Seduwa (1530m). Surrounding Seduwa are beautiful rolling hills with a picturesque mountain backdrop.  Overnight in Seduwa.

Today, we will move to Gaon. Particularly on that day we have to walk a long distance from Seduwa to Gaon (2065m). Along the way, we will be exposed to the beautiful flora and fauna found in the region.  Overnight stay at a tent in Gaon.

Today, we will be moving to Khongma (3562m) from Gaon. We have an early start the day as we climb almost 1500 meters over the day. It is going to be a long day’s trek, taking roughly 7-8 hours . The trek will, however, be adventurous as the trail takes us to several amazing landscapes. Overnight stay at a tent.

Today, we stay put in order to acclimatize. We will be spending the day at Khongma, resting and exploring the village. We'll interact with the villagers, learning about their culture, and eating their typical meals. Overnight stay at a tent.

From Khongma we will climb Shipton La and from there we will descend to Mumbak (4200m). In Mumbuk, we will take a short day hike, crossing the Shipton La. Overnight stay at a tent.

For the trek to Yangri Kharka, we have to move early in the morning.  It is best to cross the Dhampu Pass before sunrise in order to ensure the best weather and views.  Seeing the entire Annapurna Range being touched by the sun with the valley resting below in the darkness is something you will never forget. To get to Yangri Kharka takes about six hours. Overnight stay at tent.

For the trek to Shershong (4650m), we will again start moving in the morning, after taking a breakfast in Yangri Kharka.  It takes about six hours in total.  Shershong is an absolutely gorgeous place to stay for the night.  We're surrounded by a desolate alpine landscape with a 360 degree view of the pristine Himayala mountains.  Overnight in Shershong.

Today we move even higher up until we reach Makalu Base Camp. The path to Makalu Base Camp is difficult in nature, yet endlessly rewarding.  We are at the base of some of the world's tallest mountains.  Overnight stay at a tented camp.

Today is allocated for resting and acclimatizing at the Base Camp. This is a crucial part of the itinerary, as these days of acclimatization will help us to get used to the high-altitude conditions as well as prepare ourselves for the expedition that lies ahead. Overnight stay at a tented camp.

We wake up, feeling lucky with the views right outside of our tent.  After breakfast, we begin our descent back down to Nhe Kharka.  However, it's not much of a descent, as we still find ourselves enveloped by the beautiful, rugged Makalu range peaks.  Overnight here in tent.

Today, we head to Mumbuk, a small village in the region of Makalu. It will take five hours of trekking from Nhe Kharka to reach there.  We are under the tree line and there is much more green around us, though the mountains are still clearly visible.  You can explore the village after we arrive in Mumbuk. Overnight stay at tent.

Today we return to Kauma from Mumbuk. We will be walking a bit longer in comparison to other days, but the views distract us from our tiredness. So, we take your breakfast in the morning and head on towards Kauma taking rest for tea and lunch along the way. Overnight stay at tent.

Again today your walk will be extended for 6 hours like yesterday when you moved from Mumbuk to Kauma. But the trek will be interesting as you will get to know lots of things about the nature, people and different vegetations. You will take your lunch on the way to Tashi Gaoni. Overnight stay at tent.

After breakfast, we have a full day of downward trekking ahead of ourselves.  We have constant mesmerizing views of rolling hills, terraced hillsides, and looming peaks.  After roughly six hours of descending, we reach Pukuwa.  Overnight in Pukuwa.

After taking breakfast and briefly exploring Pukuwa, we return to either Num or Bamling, depending on time and your interests. As you have already seen Num, we can go through it, but in case if you have time and willing to explore more, definitely there is a high chance for the explorations. Overnight stay at tent.

We have a relaxed breakfast and an easygoing drive to Tumlingtar.  We will spend the rest of the day enjoying the local food and cultural dances. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.

We take a scenic flight back to the Kathmandu domestic airport.  You can spend the rest of the day seeing any sights in Kathmandu that you haven't already seen.  We'll have a celebratory Nepali dinner.  Overnight in hotel.

We will transport you to the airport.  Thanks for trekking with Adventure Himalayan Travels.  We look forward to seeing you again!
