Adventure Himalayan Travels and Treks offers this unique bird watching package into the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.  Many visitors to Nepal have never heard of this place, though it is rich in biodiversity and has gorgeous scenery.  The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, established in 1976, covers 175 sqkm. The vegetation is mainly tall Khar-pater grassland with a few patches of Khair-sissoo, scrub forest and deciduous mixed riverine forest. The Reserve offers important habitat for a variety of wildlife. The last surviving population (about 100 individuals) of Wild Buffalo are found here. Other mammals occurring here are hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer and blue bull.  The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve houses over 400 species of birds, including two species that are not found elsewhere in Nepal - the spotted wren babbler and the olive ground warbler. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve offers 280 species of land birds, including 20 species of ducks, 2 species of ibises, many storks, egrets, herons and the endangered swamp partridge and Bengal florican.

Before we visit Koshi Tappu, we visit another bird watching hotspot: Phulchowki.  Phulchowki is not only the most popular place in the Kathmandu valley for bird watching, it is also a beautiful place to take a day hike. Rhododendrons of different varieties and colors from pure white to dark red are found here. Around 265 species of birds are recorded here to date. The birds seen here include flycatchers, yuhinas, sunbirds, flowerpeckers, rosefinches, babblers, warblers, tits, thrushes, minivets, woodpeckers, eagles and many migrant birds. Godavari, at the foot of Phulchowki hill where Royal Botanical Garden is situated, records over 100 species of birds including lesser Rackettailed drongo, Tibetan siskin and the spotted forktail.
